PORQUE O DIA 8 MARÇO / WHY THE 8TH MARCH dia da mulher

*PORQUÊ O DIA 8 DE MARÇO *

*Neste dia, do ano de 1857, as operárias têxteis de uma fábrica de
Nova Iorque entraram em greve, ocupando a fábrica, para reivindicarem
a redução de um horário de mais de 16 horas por dia para 10 horas.
Estas operárias que, nas suas 16 horas, recebiam menos de um terço do
salário dos homens, foram fechadas na fábrica onde, entretanto, se
declarara um incêndio, e cerca de 130 mulheres morreram queimadas. Em
1910, numa conferência internacional de mulheres realizada na
Dinamarca, foi decidido, em homenagem àquelas mulheres, comemorar o 8
de Março como "Dia Internacional da Mulher". De então para cá o
movimento a favor da emancipação da mulher tem tomado forma, tanto em
Portugal como no resto do mundo. *

*Pretende-se chamar a atenção para o papel e a dignidade da mulher e
levar a uma tomada de consciência do valor da pessoa, perceber o seu
papel na sociedade, contestar e rever preconceitos e limitações que
vêm sendo impostos à mulher.*

MULHERES SAIREM UMA NOITE POR ANO E FAZEREM COISAS QUE NAS OUTRAS
NOITES NAO FAZEM, MAS SIM PARA AS MULHERES SE APERCEBEREM DO VALOR QUE
TEM E DO DIREITO DE SAIREM QUANDO LHES APETECE PARA SE DIVERTIREM COMO
OS HOMENS O FAZEM.*

*March the 8th marks International Women's Day. Every year the day is
set aside to celebrate the achievements and successes of women the
world over, as well as remember women everywhere who suffer
discrimination or oppression because of their gender. *

*The idea of an International Women's Day first arose at the turn of
the century, stemming from the push for political and economic rights
of women, especially the struggle for the right to vote. On March the
8th, 1857, in one of the first organised actions by working women
anywhere in the world, hundreds of women garment and textile workers
went on strike in New York City protesting against low wages, long
working hours, and inhumane working conditions. The event ended in
violent struggles with police, 130 women werw locked in a factory
where they worked and burn alive in a fire. Two years later, again in
March, these women formed their first labour union to try and protect
themselves and gain some basic rights in the workplace. *

CHANGE THE MEANING OF WHAT THEY WANTED OF THIS DAY...*
